  • XR Dark Patterns Research Assistant – We are recruiting a Research Assistant starting March 2022, for up to 13.5 months, to investigate dark patterns in extended reality. This position is funded by Meta. Apply before 9 January 2023 via the job advertisement and read more on the project page.
  • VR/AR/MR RA or Postdoc RA – We have Research Assistant and Postdoctoral positions exploring virtual and augmented reality, user privacy and bystander security in VR. Please see the job advertisement for details.
  • Postdoctoral Researcher – Thermal Attacks – We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to develop machine‑learning techniques for detecting and mitigating thermal imaging side‑channel attacks as part of the PT‑HEAT project. Visit the PT‑HEAT project page and job advertisement to apply.

PhD Opportunities

Prospective PhD and postdoc applicants should email mohamed.khamis@glasgow.ac.uk with a brief CV (max. 4 pages), a statement of why you want to join the lab and your research interests (up to 500 words), your most relevant publications and/or masters thesis, your latest transcripts, and your final grade and ranking. Please contact me early if you are interested in doing a PhD as there are multiple scholarships you may apply to. Please be aware that they all have different deadlines and eligibility criteria. Some of the scholarships available through the University of Glasgow are summarised below :

  • University of Glasgow Scholarships – Funded for 3.5 years, covering a living‑cost stipend at the UKRI rate and tuition fees. International students may receive either a full scholarship (covering all fees), or a partial award (covering home‑rate fees, with the student covering the difference to the international rate), depending on ranking. Deadline is 31 January every year.
  • University of Glasgow Minerva Scholarship – These are 5-year scholarships to support part-time PhD students spending two thirds of their time on research and one third of their time on teaching. They support tuition fees at the home level and a remuneration package of at least £21,383 per year for living expenses. More information is available here. Deadline is 31 January every year.
  • James McCune Smith PhD Scholarship – Fund Black UK domiciled students to undertake PhD research at the University in any research area in which we can offer supervision.  More information is available here. Deadline varies.
  • Excellence Bursaries – Covers £10,000 of the tuition fees for international students, or full tuition waiver for home students. Deadline is 31 January every year.
  • Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) Scholarships – Up to four Chinese candidates are nominated annually by University of Glasgow’s School of Computing Science via an internal selection process (deadline is 31 January). The three‑year award provides a monthly stipend and partial tuition fees, with the University waiving the remainder. All past nominees have been successful, though this is not guaranteed.
  • Industry co‑funded Studentships – Occasionally, industrial partners co‑fund 3½‑year PhD studentships with us. These cover a stipend and tuition fees (typically at the home rate; international students may need to cover the difference).
  • Partnership PhD studentships – These are exclusively for candidates who are currently employed, and wish to remain employed, by their industry employer throughout the PhD. The candidate can be based at a company anywhere in the world, and can do their PhD full time or part time. More information can be found here.

Postdoc Opportunities

Our lab is extremely supportive of all its members. We provide a dynamic, supportive environment, so they can become the best independent scientists they can be. Many of our Alumni ended up becoming Professors, Lecturers, and Postdocs at top institutions. When no RA positions are advertised, aspiring postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to secure fellowship support through one of the opportunities below. We can help you develop a proposal that aligns with our research themes. Below are opportunities you may consider to apply at to fund your post with the SIRIUS Lab:

For current Postdocs and PhD students nearing completion:

  • Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship (3 years): Deadline is in February every year.
  • The Daphne Jackson Trust: Multiple routes (most without a deadline). One of the criteria is to have had a career break of at least two years duration from a paid research position, taken for family, health or caring reasons.
  • Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Fellowship (open to researchers moving within Europe. Funds 2-3 years. Deadline is usually in September).
  • Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship (Open to early career researchers who currently have, or will have, a need for flexible support due to personal circumstances e.g., parental/caring responsibilities, clinically diagnosed health issues or other personal circumstances that create a need for a flexible working pattern. Deadline is usually in October.)
  • Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Research Fellowships (There are multiple grants with different requirements – The Research Fellowship and the Brunel Fellowship are particularly relevant. The Built Environment Fellowship and the Design Fellowships occasionally solicit applications in relevant topics.)
  • The EPSRC Fellowship: Open call (discontinued).
  • The Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship (3 years): Deadline is usually in October every year. One of the criteria is to currently have, or will have by the start of the fellowship, a need for flexible support due to personal circumstances. This can include parental responsibilities, caring responsibilities, and/or clinically diagnosed health conditions that create a need for a flexible working pattern
  • The Ernest Rutherford Fellowship: Deadline is usually in October every year. .
  • The Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship (5 years): Deadline is in September every year.
  • The Royal Society Research Fellowship (8 years): Deadline is in September every year.

For applicants based outside of the UK

General tips

  • Additional Funding Opportunity: Applicants can also apply for match‑funding from the University of Glasgow’s LKAS scheme, which can top up a fellowship by £100,000.
  • Plan Ahead: Much of the fellowship paperwork (including costing, permissions, and approvals) is handled by the University’s Research Support Team. Getting in touch early helps ensure there’s enough time for them to complete these steps smoothly.
